Kujō Pond (Remains of Kujō Residence)
In the quiet southwest corner of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, Kujō Pond survives as a haunting remnant of one of Japan's most aristocratic families. The pond, its small shrine-topped islet, and the elegant two-storey teahouse Shusui-tei are the last vestiges of the sprawling estate of the Kujō family — one of the Five Regent Houses that supplied Japan's most powerful courtiers for centuries. Today this pocket of garden feels like stepping into another era: the pond reflects sky and surrounding trees, the air is unhurried, and the atmosphere is far removed from the bustle of central Kyoto. On select days, visitors can step inside Shusui-tei itself and climb to its upper floor for sweeping views across the water.
