Roman Theatre of Neapolis

Beneath the tangled streets of Naples's UNESCO-listed historic center lies one of the city's most extraordinary—and most hidden—ancient monuments: the Roman Theatre of Neapolis. Built in the 1st century and expanded into a cavernous venue for some five to six thousand spectators, it was the social heart of the old Greek colony's upper forum. Today its curved tiers, corridors and entrances survive only because they were swallowed by the medieval and modern apartment blocks that now stand above them, which makes a visit feel less like touring a ruin and more like sneaking backstage into a buried city. What makes this site special is that you don't look down on a neat excavated bowl; you walk inside it. The standard visit is run as part of the Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) route and passes through an ordinary street-level home before a trapdoor drops you into the theatre's ancient masonry. It is a vivid, tangible lesson in urban archaeology: how Naples literally builds on top of itself, layer after layer, without ever clearing the past away.
