Malacca
Melaka (also spelled Malacca) is a historic port city on Malaysia's southwest coast whose UNESCO-listed old town compresses six centuries of trade, empire, and cultural fusion into one remarkably walkable square mile. Founded as a Malay sultanate around 1400, then conquered successively by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, the city wears its layers openly—crimson colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses, Malay kampung homes, and Peranakan mansions all crowd along the river. Today, Melaka is one of Malaysia's most rewarding short trips from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. It offers a dense concentration of heritage sights, legendary street food, and a living multicultural atmosphere that UNESCO called a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East or Southeast Asia.
