River Washburn

The River Washburn is a short, fast Pennine stream that has been coaxed into something almost grand: a chain of four reservoirs running northwest to southeast across the Nidderdale AONB in North Yorkshire. For over a century its waters have been piped to Leeds, and the flooded valleys they created earned the Washburn Valley its affectionate nickname, "Leeds' Lake District." Yet it remains wilder and emptier than any real Lake District, a 16-mile dale of moorland edges, plantations and open water just minutes from the town of Otley. This is a walking destination above all. Yorkshire Water has threaded permissive paths around the reservoir shores and over the surrounding moors, so you can stitch together gentle lakeside rambles or longer hilltop circuits with views across the water. The river itself, in the stretches between dams, is the quiet reward: a beautiful, tree-lined flow of rapids and pools that feels worlds away from the busy A59 road that crosses the valley.
