Boulder
Boulder sits where the Great Plains tip up into the Rocky Mountains, a walkable college city of brick storefronts and leafy avenues pressed right against the foothills. Its signature view is the Flatirons, five tilted slabs of sandstone that lean over the west side of town like a crooked staircase to the sky, and almost everywhere you look, that rock face frames the streets, the campus and the trails. Roughly 30 miles northwest of Denver, it pairs mountain access with a downtown full of cafes, galleries and street performers, which is what makes it such a satisfying base for an active, easygoing visit. Locals joke that the city is packed with things to do, and the numbers back it up: more than 300 days of sunshine, some 300 miles of bike and multi-use paths, and tens of thousands of acres of protected open space threaded by over 150 miles of hiking trails. The result is a place where you can hike at the base of the Flatirons in the morning, wander a pedestrian mall in the afternoon and still have time for a farm-to-table dinner in the evening, all without ever getting in a car.
