Point Sublime
Perched on the rim of France's most celebrated gorge, the Point Sublime is the viewpoint most travelers refuse to skip on a visit to the Gorges du Verdon. From an altitude of around 785 metres it hurls a plunging panorama straight down onto the upstream entrance of the Grand Canyon, where the turquoise Verdon squeezes into the narrow Couloir Samson between two dizzying walls. This is the moment the river vanishes into the rock and the great gorge truly begins. The belvedere sits on the right bank just downstream of the hilltop village of Rougon, along the D952 that winds between the villages and the canyon edge. It is a listed site, and its reputation is well earned: among the most picturesque outlooks over the Verdon, it packs the drama of the whole landscape into a single, framed view, with the Paroi du Duc and the Escalès cliffs closing the canyon mouth on either side.
