Vong Canh Hill

Vong Canh Hill (Đồi Vọng Cảnh) is a low, pine-crowned rise about 43 metres high on the south bank of the Perfume River, roughly 5–7 km southwest of central Hue. Its name literally means "gazing at the scenery" — the French once called it the Belvédère — and that is exactly what you do here: stand above a soft bend of the river and watch the water thread between hills, gardens, and the dark silhouettes of the Nguyen dynasty's royal tombs. Long a favorite scenic lookout for Hue's emperors, the hill later held military bunkers whose crumbling remains still dot the slopes, and it has recently been reworked into an open public park with winding stone paths, a flower garden, and a tall purple-rimmed viewing tower built for the sunset. Admission is free, the walk up is short, and on a clear late afternoon the view over the river — framed by distant mountains and drifting dragon boats — is among the most celebrated in the old imperial capital.
