Shonkin Lake
Shonkin Lake is a roughly 500-acre prairie lake in Chouteau County, Montana, set at about 3,200 feet within the vast ancient channel known as the Shonkin Sag. Managed as public water by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, it offers a quietly remote fishing experience far from the crowds that gather at the state's better-known destinations. What gives Shonkin Lake its sense of place is the landscape itself: an almost surreal flatness broken only by distant buttes and mountain islands, the kind of open country that makes the sky feel impossibly large.
