Ulysses Mountain
Ulysses Mountain is a 7,649 ft (2,332 m) summit in Idaho's Bitterroot Range, deep in the old Salmon National Forest now managed as the Salmon-Challis, about 20 miles northwest of the town of Salmon. It is a quiet, remote destination for backcountry hikers and peak-baggers rather than a day-trip sight, and its reward is one of the region's classic relics: a tall steel fire-lookout tower standing on a wide-open top with sweeping views of the surrounding ridgelines. The peak forms the high point on a ridge that divides Indian Creek from Sage Creek, just northwest of North Fork and due south of Indian Peak. A rough service road runs almost to the summit, making this an unusually accessible lookout for the Bitterroots—though the drive and the climb each ask for a sturdy vehicle, good boots, and a willingness to read an old map closely.
