Ombergs bokskog naturreservat

Tucked into the south-facing slopes of Mount Omberg, where the hillside tips down toward the clear blue water of Lake Vättern, Ombergs bokskog protects one of the northernmost beech forests in Sweden. At just nine hectares it is small enough to wander in an hour, yet grand enough to earn a reputation as one of Östergötland's most beloved outings — a cathedral of slender trunks, rocky shoreline and birdsong that repeatedly earns it some of the highest ratings of any reserve in the county. What makes this forest feel special is its sense of age and rarity. Beech thrives here alongside oak and elm, many of them thick, ancient specimens, the oldest standing right down by the water's edge in ground that was first set aside for protection back in 1946. The result is a calm, shady woods that feels far older and more southern than the Swedish landscape it sits in — and a haven for lichens, fungi, insects and woodpeckers.
