Musée, Maison des Princes, Tour de Guet et Hortulus
Tucked behind the cobbled lanes of Pérouges, one of France's most perfectly preserved medieval villages east of Lyon, the Musée du Vieux Pérouges is really three experiences under one ticket: a candlelit mansion once tied to the Dukes of Savoy, a clamber up a watchtower with a 360-degree view over the rooftops, and a small geometrically planted garden of the Middle Ages. Housed in the Maison des Princes at 1 rue des Princes and run by the conservation society that rescued the village from ruin a century ago, the museum mixes folk-history collections, contemporary art in temporary shows, a weaver's workshop and the Hortulus garden. The narrow spiral stairs and the panoramic terrace make it one of the most atmospheric stops in the cité.
