Zero Kilometer Marker (Mariupol)
The Zero Kilometer Marker is a small public art object set into the pavement on Mariupol's central thoroughfare, Prospekt Myru. A round granite disc about a metre across, it works like a city's measuring point: from it are engraved the distances to major European capitals, turning an ordinary sidewalk into a symbolic starting line between Mariupol and the west. Unlike centuries-old kilometre-zero stones elsewhere, this one is recent and civic-made: it was installed in late 2019 after Mariupol residents voted for it through the city's participatory budget, a project that funded both the monument and the tidying of the ground around it. Today it sits on a damaged avenue in a city devastated by war, so it is best understood less as a place to visit and more as a quiet landmark and a reminder of how this coastal city once oriented itself toward Europe.
