Shinshu Kiso Furusato Experience Center (Furusato Taikenkan Kiso-Fukushima)
In the forest town of Kiso, in Nagano's central highlands, the Shinshu Kiso Furusato Experience Center (Furusato Taikenkan Kiso-Fukushima) turns a beloved old wooden schoolhouse into a hands-on gateway to rural Japanese life. Built in 1928 from timber donated by local residents and used as Kurogawa Elementary until it closed in 1997, the warm wooden building reopened in 2002 as an experience facility run by a local NPO, so visitors learn by doing—grinding, kneading, whittling and carving their way through the crafts of the Kiso Valley. What the center does best is make traditions tangible. Local-food workshops let you roll soba from stone-ground Kiso-grown buckwheat, shape gohei-mochi rice skewers glazed with perilla-miso, or turn a log of prized Kiso hinoki cypress into a pair of chopsticks. Alongside the experience programs, the same old-school grounds now host the Kiso Toy Museum, a wood-education museum where children and adults play with traditional 'good toys.' With RV pitches and tent sites from late spring to autumn, it's as much a place to stay in the valley as a place to visit for a few hours.
