Mirador Cueva de los Murciélagos
The Mirador Cueva de los Murciélagos is a roadside viewpoint set at the foot of one of northern Mexico's great natural wonders: a colossal cave mouth bored into a hillside above the San Juan River, in the Cañón de La Boca on the edge of the Sierra de La Silla, a few kilometres beyond La Boca dam near the Pueblo Mágico of Santiago. Its single, spectacular job is to put you in the right place at the right moment to watch one of the country's most remarkable wildlife events unfold. Come late afternoon, the dark interior of the cave begins to pour out bats — by the millions — streaming skyward in a swirling black column to hunt insects over the canyon. It is a free, easy stop that pairs a jaw-dropping natural show with riverside walks, local food stalls and a scatter of bat-themed murals, and it makes a perfect half-day escape from the heat and traffic of Monterrey, just 36 km to the north.
