Canales Reservoir
Canales Reservoir (Embalse de Canales) is an artificial lake set on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada in the province of Granada, famous for the old village of Canales that lies beneath its waters and occasionally resurfaces when levels drop. A popular half-day escape from Granada city, it combines open-water recreation — canoeing, fishing, swimming — with a network of hiking paths that thread through tunnels, old canal walls, and hilltop viewpoints overlooking the Genil River valley. The reservoir sits at roughly 960 metres altitude, inaugurated in 1988 and managed by the Guadalquivir River Basin Authority. Its basin of 156 square kilometres feeds water to farmland and homes below, but for visitors the story is one of scenery and quiet adventure just 15 km from the city.
