Castle of Castrojeriz
Crowning a lone limestone hill above the wheat flats of northern Castile, the Castle of Castrojeriz (Castillo de Castrojeriz) is one of the great fortified landmarks of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. Perched on the Cerro del Castillo at roughly 900 metres, its consolidated ruins dominate the village that grew up in their shadow and, in turn, the broad Meseta stretching toward Burgos. The very name of the town preserves the castle: "castro" means the hilltop fort that has guarded this crossing of routes since prehistoric times. This is not a tidy restored show-castle but an open-air ruin made vivid by patient archaeological work. Decades of consolidation have stabilised walls that were collapsing after centuries of neglect, and a climb to the summit rewards visitors with a legible sequence of medieval building phases, a remarkable subterranean cistern, and sweeping views over one of the most atmospheric stopovers on the pilgrimage road to Santiago.
