Rugova
Rugova is a vast, densely forested mountain massif on the Montenegro–Kosovo border, the kind of place Google Maps summarises as "a vast sweep of forested peaks with quaint rental cabins, rugged hiking routes and mountain views." Sitting high in the chain known as the Accursed Mountains, it is a landscape of steep limestone slopes, deep gorges and alpine pasture where the tree line gives way to open meadows and cold, clear mountain lakes. The name itself speaks to its history as a crossroads: it derives from a word for "street" or "road," because the only route linking Albania and Montenegro for centuries ran right through these mountains. For travelers, Rugova rewards a specific kind of appetite—long ridgeline walks, a taste of remote highland life and big, open panoramas rather than polished facilities. You come here to climb, to walk between the lakes and to stand on the border peaks that look out over both Montenegro's "black mountains" and the Kosovo valleys below.
