Arroyo de la Canaleja
The Arroyo de la Canaleja is a ten-kilometre stream threading through the village of Villanueva del Rosario in the mountainous northeast of Málaga province, where it feeds into the Río Guadalhorce. Though small, this waterway gives the Alto Guadalhorce one of its most charming walking corridors: the Gran Senda de Málaga (GR 249) begins its twelfth stage at the village bridge over the Canaleja and traces the stream's banks through gallery forest of poplars and elms before reaching the river confluence. Higher up in the sierra, the Canaleja carves through holm oak and Spanish oak woodland, past ancient lime kilns and abandoned threshing floors, forming a rewarding trail for day hikers who want to walk a living watercourse through the Sierra Gorda landscape.
