Gërmia Park

Gërmia Park is Pristina's green lung — a protected forest that begins just a few kilometres northeast of the boulevards and suddenly swaps traffic for oak, beech and pine. Set aside as a Regional Nature Park in 1987 and managed by the city's public company Hortikultura, the park sits on a 62-square-kilometre massif whose hills and stream valleys climb to a highest point of Butos at 1,050 metres. More than three-quarters of it is woodland, threaded with marked trails, natural springs and open picnic meadows, which is why it pulls locals out of the capital by the thousand every weekend. There is something here for almost every kind of visitor: a long 50-metre outdoor swimming pool known locally as Gërmia Lake that turns the park into the city's summer social hub, family playgrounds and sports courts, dog-friendly lawns, cycling lanes and a hike to the wooded heights above the plain. Entry to the park itself is free, and on a clear day the views back over Pristina make it an easy, rewarding half-day escape from sightseeing downtown.
