Huai San Reservoir
Huai San Reservoir is a beloved roadside stop in Mae Lao District, Chiang Rai, where a public road plunges straight through the spillway of a community reservoir. In the dry season, water flows just a few inches over the asphalt, inviting cars to splash through, families to set up picnic tables in the shallows, and kids to slide down the current. It is the kind of unexpected place that turns a mountain drive into a memory. The reservoir sits about 22 kilometres southwest of Chiang Rai's clock tower, along the scenic route that connects the city to Doi Chang, one of Thailand's best-known coffee-growing highlands. Designed as a conservation agriculture tourism centre by the Pong Phrae subdistrict, it doubles as the village's communal fish pond and a place for locals to relax after work.
