Ponkunnath Mahadeva Temple
Ponkunnath Mahadeva Temple is an ancient Shiva shrine tucked along the banks of the Meenachil River in Chempilavu, Kottayam district, Kerala. Far from the commercial bustle of the state's major temple towns, it offers a rare glimpse of devotional Kerala untouched by modern renovation — stone pillars, wooden structures, and carved sculptures that transport visitors to another era. The temple complex houses two shrines: a main sanctum dedicated to Lord Shiva (Mahadeva) and a separate temple for Lord Krishna. Its deep link to the famed Kidangoor Subramanya Swami Temple nearby — where Lord Shiva here is revered as the father of the Subramanya deity — adds a rich mythological dimension to any visit.
