Hoz de Orillares
Hoz de Orillares is a small but spectacular limestone canyon carved by the River Pilde on the western edge of Soria province, deep in the pine-clad Pinares Sorianos. The river has tunneled through soft rock over millennia, creating a gorge of sheer walls, cascading caves, and an underground passage you can walk through by daylight. Despite its drama, the route down into the canyon is one of the easiest and most rewarding short hikes in Castilla y León—flat, family-friendly, and blessedly uncrowded. A colony of griffon vultures nests on the cliff ledges above the gorge, and you can often watch them soar far lower than at the nearby Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park because the surrounding mountains rise only modestly from the valley floor. After the walk, the path continues past a spring called Fuente de las Mozas and an old water mill to a medieval stone bridge, making it a perfect half-day outing.
