Indian Head Rock
Perched on the western flank of Bayview Hill in southeast San Francisco, Indian Head Rock is a striking natural rock outcrop that anchors one of the city's quietest and most surprising green spaces. Set within Bayview Park, a 46-acre hilltop preserve in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, the formation rises above grasslands and scrub a short climb from the streets below, rewarding visitors with sweeping views across the bay, the skyline and the coastal hills. Few people realize this windswept hill holds one of the best-preserved remnants of pre-Columbian open space in San Francisco. The rock, the WPA-era stonework, the looping paved path and the wildflower-studded slopes together make Indian Head Rock a low-key escape for walkers, birders and anyone hunting for a view that most tourists never find.
