Portals of the Past
On the north shore of Golden Gate Park's tranquil Lloyd Lake, a freestanding white marble portico with six Doric columns rises from the greenery like a doorway to nowhere. This is Portals of the Past — an architectural ruin, a memorial, and one of San Francisco's most photographed landmarks. What looks like a decorative classical folly is actually the sole surviving fragment of a Nob Hill mansion destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Donated to the city and relocated to Golden Gate Park in 1909, the structure has become an enduring symbol of San Francisco's resilience and a beloved spot for weddings, portraits, and quiet reflection.
