Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak
Rising 39 metres above a sheer cliff at 2,291 metres altitude, the Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak is the tallest summit cross in the world and one of Romania's most arresting monuments. Built between 1926 and 1928 to honour the roughly 30,000 Romanian soldiers who fell in World War I fighting across the Bucegi ridges and the Prahova Valley, this riveted steel cross presides over the town of Bușteni from a position deliberately chosen for maximum visibility. On clear nights its electric frame glows above the valley like a beacon, and on clear days the view from its edge stretches across the Carpathians in every direction. Reaching the cross means a genuine mountain excursion — either a cable car ride up to the Bucegi Plateau followed by a ridge walk, or a full-day climb from Bușteni through the Jepilor Valley. The effort is rewarded by a monument of startling scale in an extraordinary high-mountain setting.
