Hooghly River
The Hooghly (Bengali: Hugli) is the westernmost distributary of the Ganges, a river that gathers its sacred and silt-laden waters up in the plains and runs south through West Bengal, past the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah, until it spills into the Bay of Bengal. In its upper reaches it is called the Bhagirathi; Hindus revere it as a holy arm of the Ganges, while its lower banks hold one of the most storied riverfronts in the world. This is not a river you visit from a distant viewpoint so much as one you walk along, ferry across and ride beneath. From colonial ghats and a vast flower market to the soaring steel of the Howrah Bridge and temples where dawn aarti drifts over the water, the Hooghly is the working, praying, trading heart of Bengal — and the reason Calcutta ever existed at all.
