Lincoln Memorial Sculpture

On the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, the Lincoln Memorial at Waterfront Park tells a story that most Lincoln monuments leave out: Kentucky. Dedicated in the summer of 2009 as part of the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, this open-air memorial is not a tall column or a stern marble colossus. At its heart stands a 12-foot bronze of a bareheaded, beardless Lincoln, seated casually on a rock as if pausing on his way to the office, an open law book in one hand and the other stretched out in a warm "come, sit down" welcome. Around the statue, a flowing, tree-shaded path lined with four sculpted bas-relief panels carries you through Lincoln's lifelong ties to Kentucky—his frontier childhood, his Kentucky mentors and marriage, the Civil War that divided his own family, and the slavery that he watched firsthand from a Louisville riverboat and came to loathe. The path opens into a stone amphitheater that faces the Ohio River, its granite seats engraved with Lincoln's own words, inviting a moment of reflection overlooking the water. Free to visit year-round and set within the lively riverside greenspace of Waterfront Park, the memorial is an easy and rewarding stop for anyone interested in history, sculpture or a quiet bench above the river—especially when paired with the nearby Big Four Bridge and the Belle of Louisville.
