Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland
Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is New Zealand's most colourful and diverse geothermal attraction, a surreal landscape sculpted by volcanic forces over thousands of years. Located just 27 kilometres south of Rotorua on State Highway 1, this otherworldly park sits atop one of the country's most extensive geothermal systems, spanning 18 square kilometres beneath the surface. The star of the show is the iconic Champagne Pool — a 65-metre-wide crater formed by a hydrothermal eruption 900 years ago, ringed by vivid orange mineral deposits and constantly bubbling with carbon dioxide. But the park also boasts the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts daily to heights of 10–20 metres, New Zealand's largest mud pool, and the artistically named Artist's Palette with its naturally coloured hot and cold springs.
