Baracara Falls
Baracara Falls—also known as White Water Falls—is one of Guyana's most approachable river waterfalls, a broad, low cascade that tumbles over a series of rock steps and ledges on the Mazaruni River in Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), near the community of St. Edwards Mission. Unlike the thundering single drop of Kaieteur far to the south, Baracara is gentle and intimate: cool, clear water spilling across smooth stone into shallow pools you can actually swim in. It reaches you the same way most of Guyana's interior does—by water. The falls sit on the Mazaruni, roughly opposite the Aruwai Resort, and the classic approach is a speedboat from Bartica up the river, or one of the day tours that run down the Essequibo from Parika and turn into the Mazaruni. That river journey past forest-lined banks and small communities is half the pleasure, and it's why visitors rate Baracara a must-see slice of Amazonian Guyana close enough to the coast for a single outing.
