Vlhošť
Vlhošť is a striking 614-metre mountain in the Liberec Region of northern Czechia, the highest point of the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. Though its summit is cloaked in beech forest with limited panoramic views, the real spectacle lies on its western flank: dramatic multi-tiered sandstone rock terraces rising tens of metres above the hamlet of Hvězda, making it one of the most visually impressive natural landmarks in the region. The mountain has a fascinating geological story: a body of nepheline syenite (znělec) pushed through surrounding sandstone around 31 million years ago, creating a volcanic core shrouded in layered sedimentary rock. Today the area is a nature reserve protecting rare beech forests, relict pine stands, peregrine falcons, and dozens of mollusc and spider species.
