El Postigo

El Postigo is a small medieval postern gate set into the north face of Mansilla de las Mulas's impressive 13th-century walls, opening onto the banks of the River Esla. Tucked away at the end of a narrow lane hemmed in by houses, this secondary exit from the walled town offers one of the finest views of the entire fortification — and a quiet, atmospheric spot to imagine the medieval life that once thrived within. More than just a picturesque doorway, El Postigo was historically a secret passage to the river, used in times of siege and, according to local tradition, as a embarkation point when the Esla was wide enough to serve as a natural transport route across the region.
