Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station

The Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station—known as Đerdap I on its Serbian bank and Porțile de Fier I on its Romanian one—is the largest dam on the Danube and one of the biggest hydroelectric plants in Europe. Spanning the river through the wild Iron Gate gorge, it sits precisely on the international frontier: the state border between Serbia and Romania runs down the middle of the structure, so the same concrete spine of the Danube belongs to two countries at once. For a traveler, the site is less a tourist attraction than a working engineering landmark and a doorway into one of the continent's great river landscapes. Built as a joint Yugoslav–Romanian project that opened in 1972, it tames the fiercest stretch of the Danube, raised a vast upstream lake, and carved a ship lock among the largest in the world. You experience it best from the water or the surrounding Đerdap gorge rather than from inside the plant, making it a natural companion stop to the medieval Golubac Fortress downstream and the national park that surrounds it.
