Archaeological Site of Cyrene

The Archaeological Site of Cyrene is the greatest ancient Greek city in Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure set amid the green, cypress-dotted hills of Libya's Jebel Akhdar rather than the desert most travellers imagine. Founded in 631 BC by colonists from Thera (modern Santorini), it grew into one of the principal cities of the Hellenic world, later flourishing under Roman rule as a grand provincial capital. A thousand years of history are written into its sprawling ruins of temples, theatres, agoras and rock-cut tombs. What makes Cyrene extraordinary is the sheer scale and quality of its remains combined with an almost eerie solitude. There are no crowds here, no gift-shop tannoy — just weathered Doric columns against a blue sky, wildflowers pushing between ancient stones, and the silence of a city destroyed by earthquake in 365 AD and never truly rebuilt. For the traveller who makes it to this breezy plateau near the town of Shahat, the reward is raw, unfiltered antiquity.
