Abdal Musa Tomb

High in the orchard-carpeted hills above Elmalı, in Antalya's western Taurus hinterland, stands one of the most quietly powerful shrines in Anatolia: the tomb of Abdal Musa Sultan, a 14th-century dervish-poet and warrior considered the second founding saint of the Alevi-Bektashi tradition after Hacı Bektaş Veli himself. The little stone tomb that survives here is the beating heart of a vast former lodge, and for six centuries it has drawn pilgrims—Alevi and Bektashi above all, but also visitors from the wider Muslim world—to pay respect, make vows and seek blessing. What makes a visit special is the sense of place: a serene Seljuk-style domed tomb set in a green courtyard of old gravestones, approached on a lane that threads through apple orchards, and still alive with devotion rather than frozen as a museum piece. On most days you will have a calm, almost meditative encounter; in early June the same ground fills with tens of thousands of people for the annual Abdal Musa commemoration, with sacrifices, prayer, music and the turning of the semah.
