Isla de los Pájaros
Isla de los Pájaros—"Bird Island"—is a small, off-limits island sitting roughly 800 metres off the coast of Península Valdés in the Golfo San José, Argentina's Patagonia. Declared an intangible sanctuary back in 1967, it has been left untouched so that its spectacular seabird and shorebird colonies can nest in peace. You can never set foot on the island itself, but a purpose-built viewpoint and interpretation centre on the mainland beach let you watch the whole colony and the broad tidal flats through borrowed binoculars. For a wildlife stop that needs no hike, no boat and no long drive, it is one of the easiest places in the area to see a huge slice of Patagonian coastal birdlife in a single glance.
