Point de vue sur la Semois

Perched on two mossy rock blocks above a secluded bend of the Semois river, the Saurpire viewpoint (Point de vue sur la Semois) is one of the Belgian Ardennes' quietest panoramas. Reached by a short forest path off the road between Dohan and Mortehan, it lays out the river valley, the dark mass of Libehan forest, and a stretch of water that glows gold in the early morning. The name Saurpire — likely a patois deformation of "pierre aux sorts" (stone of spells) or "pierre qui ressort" (stone that emerges) — hints at the folklore of fairies and witches that clings to these sandstone ledges. Since 1936 the site has had a parking and an official plaque, making it one of the first viewpoints deliberately developed along this wild section of the Semois. Unlike the postcard crowds at the Tombeau du Géant or the Jambon, Saurpire rewards walkers who want an intimate encounter with the river's winding course, its fish-rich backwater pools, and a landscape thick with border history — this was once the frontier between the Duchy of Bouillon and the Duchy of Luxembourg.
