Mt. Haguro
Mount Haguro (Haguro-yama, はぐろさん) is a small, easy-going peak of around 240 metres on the border between Kasama and Sakuragawa in western Ibaraki. It is not the grand sacred mountain of the same name far to the north in Yamagata, but a much humbler local satoyama hill—and that is precisely its charm. In little more than an hour of walking you climb a steep forest path to a summit that holds both a tiny shrine and the earthwork remains of a medieval castle, a compact dose of nature, history and quiet countryside in a single short outing. It suits walkers who want a quick, rewarding hike close to the road or the JR Suigun Line rather than a full day on the trail. The climb is short but genuinely strenuous on its steep stretch, the woodland is peaceful, and the shrine wrapped in old ramparts leaves an unusually atmospheric impression for so small a hill.
