Sanjubanjin

Sanjūbanjin (Hall of the Thirty Deities) is a small devotional shrine-hall set within the grounds of Hōtōji Temple, a Nichiren-sect monastery on the wooded slopes of Mt. Shichimen in Fukakusa, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. The hall honours the Sanjūbanjin — thirty tutelary kami who, in the syncretic Buddha-kami faith of medieval Japan, were believed to take turns guarding the nation and the Lotus Sutra, one deity per day of the lunar month. Hōtōji itself makes the visit worthwhile far beyond its name. Here stands the oldest surviving tahōtō pagoda within Kyoto city limits, a striking vermilion Niō gate whose ceiling is painted panel-by-panel with blooming peonies, and an early 17th-century main hall that is the oldest known example of its type in the Nichiren tradition — three of the buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties. Despite this, the temple stays quiet: a short walk south of the crowds of Fushimi Inari Taisha, it offers a rare, unhurried encounter with old Kyoto.
