Macanally Mountain
Macanally Mountain is a quiet eucalypt-forested peak on the Monaro high plains of southern New South Wales, a short drive east of Cooma and well south of Canberra. Sitting at around 1,070–1,085 metres on the Great Dividing Range, it gives its name to the Macanally State Conservation Area, a 2,290-hectare reserve created in January 2003 to protect the bushland that surrounds it. This is not a buzzy tourist stop. It is a hill-walker's and naturalist's corner of the Snowy Monaro — bushland ridges, koala country, and a string of small reserves stitched together between the Numeralla valley and the Tinderry Range to the north. If you are road-tripping between Canberra, Cooma and the Snowy Mountains, it makes an easy, uncrowded detour into the quieter side of the Australian Alps.
