Pura Bale Agung Desa Adat Subagan
Pura Bale Agung is the great communal temple of Desa Adat Subagan, a customary village set in the heart of Amlapura, the capital of Bali's eastern Karangasem Regency. The name speaks plainly to its purpose: bale agung means the grand pavilion or hall where a whole community gathers. Rather than a curated sight, this is a working village temple—the ceremonial and civic centre of a living Balinese Hindu community, most vivid when its people assemble for festivals and council. What makes Subagan special is that it counts among the Desa Bali Aga, the island's 'old villages' that preserve hereditary customs and a fiercely independent ritual calendar passed down through generations. The Pura Bale Agung sits at the heart of that inherited life, where the bendesa adat—the customary village head—convenes the people and where the village's most distinctive observances are organised.
