Nurete Kannon (Wet-Handed Kannon)Buddhist temple

Kyoto · JP

Nurete Kannon (Wet-Handed Kannon)

Tucked behind the Okunoin (rear sub-hall) of Kyoto's famous Kiyomizu-dera temple, the Nurete Kannon — literally "Wet-Handed Kannon" — is a small stone statue of the Bodhisattva of Compassion that sits in a quiet pond, encircled by a low stone fence. Unlike most temple images that visitors simply look upon, this Kannon invites direct interaction: you scoop water from an adjacent basin and pour it over the statue's shoulders, entrusting her with the cold-water purification rite (mizugori) that you would otherwise perform on yourself. In a temple that draws millions of visitors each year, this little shrine remains one of its most intimate and overlooked corners — a place where the act of devotion is physical, personal, and unhurried.
