Fortress Creek Falls
Fortress Creek Falls is one of the Blue Mountains' most dramatic and most hard-won waterfalls. Where Fortress Creek reaches the lip of the Grose Valley it pitches over a sheer sandstone cliff in a long plunge (officially about 70 m, with some guides citing up to 100 m) before dropping toward Govett Gorge and continuing on to Govetts Creek.[web-7df3a9c220ffe1ee-0c0e4cad:p1][web-c7176c70a159cf3b-1e753e0e:p1] Set in the Blackheath area of Blue Mountains National Park, it sits in wild cliff-top country well away from the sealed lookout car parks of Katoomba and Leura. What makes the spot famous is the cluster of small rock pools perched right on the cliff edge at the very head of the falls. Perched on the lip with the valley falling away beneath them, they have become one of the most photographed 'infinity pool' scenes in the ranges, framed by views across to Lockleys Pylon, Mount Banks and the great walls of the Grose Valley.[web-115b5c7f1a51f288-6b1273bc:p1][web-edee3dc02ac602bd-7ea84712:p3] Reaching them is the point: a long, rough bushwalk that rewards fit, confident walkers with a view that feels genuinely remote.
