Yuelu Academy
Yuelu Academy is the oldest institution of higher learning in China still fulfilling its original mission. Founded in 976 at the foot of Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, it has trained scholars for over a thousand years without interruption — evolving from a Song Dynasty academy into today's Hunan University, where history and philosophy students still study within its ancient halls. Walking its courtyards feels like stepping into the living bloodstream of Chinese intellectual tradition. The 21,000-square-meter complex layers Ming and Qing architecture over a Song Dynasty soul. Its famous entrance couplet — "Only Chu has talent; here it flourishes most" — is among the most quoted inscriptions in China. Beyond the gates, visitors find a serene sequence of halls, ponds, bamboo groves, and memorial temples, plus exhibitions covering Qin bamboo slips, the academy's own history, and China's broader story of traditional academies.
