Reka Perovka
The Perovka (Finnish Perojoki) is a short, lively forest river threading through the Vyborg District of Leningrad Oblast, about an hour's drive north of Saint Petersburg on the old Karelian Isthmus. Rising from Lake Bolshoye Kirillovskoye and falling 47 kilometres to the wooded shores of Lake Krasnoholmskoye, it is the kind of clear, rock-strewn waterway that draws paddlers, anglers and quiet-nature walkers rather than sightseers. What makes the Perovka worth a trip is its compactness and character: in a single day or weekend you can paddle a string of riffles and small rapids, portage around old timber dams, walk bank-side forest trails, and read the scars of the Mannerheim Line fortifications that once ringed these woods. It is an intimate slice of Karelian landscape, close to the city yet unmistakably wild.
