Church of our SaviourCathedral

Nuuk · GL

Church of our Saviour

Perched at the top of Nuuk's old Colonial Harbour, the Church of Our Saviour is impossible to miss: a steep-roofed, red-painted wooden cathedral with a slender white portico and a clock tower that has marked the hours over Greenland's capital since 1828-style anniversary years ago. Built in 1848–49 and raised to the status of national cathedral in 1993, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the small but vibrant capital, and a natural first stop for anyone wandering Nuuk's historic waterfront. More than a pretty red facade, the church is the spiritual heart of the Lutheran Church of Greenland. Inside, white-paneled walls, pale wooden benches and a striking crucifix flanked by kneeling angels create a calm, luminous interior, while the surrounding hillside links you to Hans Egede's statue, the Colonial Harbour museums and sweeping views across the fjord. It is a quiet, free-to-visit landmark that pairs perfectly with an old-town stroll.
