Gucur Cami
In the old silk-makers' quarter of Tire, a small town of early Ottoman and Aydınoğulları monuments in İzmir province, the Gücur Mosque (Gucur Cami) keeps watch over a quiet lane. Built as a domed octagonal hall around a dervish's endowment, it is plain on the outside but carries some of the most delicate brick and stone craftsmanship in the city — and it is still an active place of worship rather than a museum piece. Listed among the works of the Aydınoğulları beylik and restored by the General Directorate of Foundations, the mosque rewards visitors who like stepping off the main tourist trail to read centuries of history in rubble stone, reused columns and patterned brickwork. For a town often passed through on the way to İzmir's coast, it offers an intimate look at the faith-and-charity culture that made Tire a 'city of mosques and tombs.'
