Lilla Skeppundstjärnen
Lilla Skeppundstjärnen is a small, quiet forest lake set in the bog-and-timber heartland of Hagfors, in Sweden's lake-rich province of Värmland. Its Swedish name is a useful clue to its character: 'Lilla' means little and a 'tjärn/stjärn' is a modest woodland lake or tarn. At roughly 0.21 square kilometres with a shoreline of under two kilometres, sitting at about 186 metres above the sea, it is the kind of intimate, tree-ringed water that rewards a slow visit rather than a checklist. It is best understood as the smaller half of a pair. Just a few hundred metres away lies Stora Skeppundstjärnen—the 'great' sister lake, slightly larger and deeper—so the two Skeppund lakes sit side by side in the same low ridge of spruce forest and open mire. Neither is a developed attraction; both are the real, unshowy Värmland that locals know: dark water, soft ground, birdsong and the smell of wet peat.
