Lake Kaniere
Lake Kaniere is a calm, forest-ringed lake about 19 km east of Hokitika on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Encircled on three sides by steep mountains and fringed by native bush that runs right down to the water, it is one of the region's favourite spots for a laid-back day outdoors—swimming, boating, fishing and short forest walks are all on the doorstep. Its placid, sheltered surface and easy access from State Highway make it one of the best lakes in the area for water sports, while the surrounding Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve offers a mix of easy strolls and a serious multi-hour walk. The lake is also the source of Hokitika's water supply, and the historic Kaniere Water Race, an 11-kilometre channel carrying water toward town, has become a popular cycling and walking route.
