Hammars backar
Hammars backar is the name of the open, wind-scoured slopes on Skåne's southeast coast near Glemmingebro, the western arm of the larger Hammars backar–Kåsebergaåsen nature conservation area. A steep cliff coast rises some thirty metres above the flat farmland behind it, topped by calcareous sandy grassland and heath that has been kept wide and flower-rich by grazing animals for hundreds of years. Designated in 1996 and part of the EU's Natura 2000 network, the reserve protects a rare habitat in Sweden — sand steppe — and offers year-round hiking along the cliff edge, sweeping views over the Baltic, and some of the best spring birdwatching on the Österlen coast. The famous stone ship setting Ale's Stones (Ales stenar) lies a few kilometres east along the same ridge at Kåseberga.
