Moscow Russian Drama Theatre under the direction of Schepenko
Tucked inside a 19th-century merchant mansion on Zemlyanoy Val in the Tagansky district, the Moscow Russian Drama Theatre under the direction of Mikhail Shchepenko is one of the capital's most beloved small venues. A handful of steps from Taganskaya metro, it trades grand opera-house scale for something rarer: a low-ceilinged chamber hall where the actors land just a few metres from your seat, and where audiences are greeted with free tea and baranki before the lights dim. The company grew out of a student studio founded in 1974 at the Mendeleev Chemical-Technological Institute and became a professional Moscow state theatre in 1987, and it still carries that intimate, workshop-like spirit. Its repertoire is built on Russian classics—Ostrovsky, Chekhov, Tvardovsky, Tolstoy, Shmelev—and devoted largely to family and youth performances, which make up close to half the season. Visitors consistently rate it 4.8 out of 5, praising warm acting, good sightlines from every seat and a home-from-home atmosphere. If you want a dose of sincere, old-school Russian theatre rather than spectacle, this small stage in central Moscow is a memorable detour—and a favourite for taking children.
